How Much Does Empurau Cost?

A single one-kilogram empurau prepared in a restaurant can cost between RM1200 to RM1500. Price varies widely depending upon the age and weight of the fish. When a high-roller flies often from China or Singapore with people to impress, the cost is no object. Prices can exceed RM1500 per kilogram.

There have been one-kilogram empurau was purportedly sold in Ipoh, Malaysia, for RM1600. The same customer claimed that they had paid RM2000 for a one-kilogram fish earlier in Kuala Lumpur.
The river, and even the stretch of that particular river, in which an empurau is caught makes a difference. Shorter empurau with white flesh are typically valued more than their red or copper-colored counterparts. Firmer flesh from fish over three kilograms in weight is preferred. Fish caught near Kapit also fetch a higher price.

In March 2016, the Borneo Post reported that a fishmonger sold a giant, 7.9-kilogram (17.4 pounds) empurau for the equivalent of RM 1,940 in Malaysian ringgit!

Is Empurau Fish Farming Profitable?

What is fish farming called?

Fish farming  involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures such as fish ponds, usually for food. It is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture.

Is Empurau Fish Farming Profitable?

Yes, aquaculture can be profitable IF the fish farmer has the right natural resources, good management abilities and sufficient capital available for investment in the enterprise. Fish farming and associated industries have expanded through the 1980's and 90's. Expansion has slowed somewhat, however, growth continues.

How much does a fish farmer make a year?

Salaries in the aquaculture industry can vary widely based on the type of position, the size of the operation, geographic location, and the employee's prior experience in the industry. The  average salary for a fish farmer as RM 284,000 in 2019.

Empurau Fish

https://bit.ly/infoempurauIkan (pronounced "ee-kan") means "fish" in Bahasa Malay, so empurau are referred to locally as ikan empurau.

Empurau are members of the tor tambroides species found throughout Southeast Asia.

Empurau are freshwater, bottom-feeding scavengers. They are omnivores, meaning they'll pretty well consume whatever comes along. A few special ones sustain themselves with a diet of wild fruit that falls from trees overhanging the jungle rivers in Sarawak.

RAS water treatment processes

A series of treatment processes is utilized to maintain water quality in intensive fish farming operations. These steps are often done in order or sometimes in tandem. After leaving the vessel holding fish the water is first treated for solids before entering a biofilter to convert ammonia, next degassing and oxygenation occur, often followed by heating/cooling and sterilization. Each of these processes can be completed by using a variety of different methods and equipment, but regardless all must take place to ensure a healthy environment that maximizes fish growth and health.

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are used in home aquaria and for fish production where water exchange is limited and the use of biofiltration is required to reduce ammonia toxicity. Other types of filtration and environmental control are often also necessary to maintain clean water and provide a suitable habitat for fish. The main benefit of RAS is the ability to reduce the need for fresh, clean water while still maintaining a healthy environment for fish. To be operated economically commercial RAS must have high fish stocking densities, and many researchers are currently conducting studies to determine if RAS is a viable form of intensive aquaculture.

Home aquaria and inland commercial aquariums are a form of RAS where the water quality is very carefully controlled and the stocking density of fish is relatively low. In these systems the goal is to display the fish rather than producing food. However, biofilters and other forms of water treatment are still used to reduce the need to exchange water and to maintain water clarity. Just like in traditional RAS water must be removed periodically to prevent nitrate and other toxic chemicals from building up in the system. Coastal aquariums often have high rates of water exchange and are typically not operated as a RAS due to their proximity to a large body of clean water.

Indoor Empurau Fish Farming

An alternative to outdoor open ocean cage aquaculture, is through the use of a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). A RAS is a series of culture tanks and filters where water is continuously recycled and monitored to keep optimal conditions year round. To prevent the deterioration of water quality, the water is treated mechanically through the removal of particulate matter and biologically through the conversion of harmful accumulated chemicals into nontoxic ones.

Other treatments such as ultraviolet sterilization, ozonation, and oxygen injection are also used to maintain optimal water quality. Through this system, many of the environmental drawbacks of aquaculture are minimized including escaped fish, water usage, and the introduction of pollutants. The practices also increased feed-use efficiency growth by providing optimum water quality.

This empurau fish grows in ph 6 to 7, 23f to 27f temp. It's does well in a RAS setup.

Diseases not common unless under stress conditions due to management of the water and feeding patterns( over feed or lack of it). This is a migratory fish in nature and hence it could stand a diverse conditions. Growth rate is dependent on fish farming management and stocking rate.
